Azure Virtual Desktop (AVD) Configuration

This guide will walk you through the process of setting up and connecting to Azure Virtual Desktop (AVD) using the Windows App on macOS. Azure Virtual Desktop provides remote access to the VA network and applications from your Mac device.

Installation Options

Option 1: Mac App Store

  1. Open the App Store on your Mac

  2. Search for "Microsoft Remote Desktop" or "Windows App"

  3. Click Get or Download

  4. Wait for the installation to complete

Option 2: Using Homebrew

If you prefer using Homebrew (a package manager for macOS), follow these steps:

  1. Open Terminal

  2. Install the Windows App using Homebrew by entering the following command:

    brew install --cask windows-app
  3. Wait for the installation to complete

Connecting to Azure Virtual Desktop

Ensure PIV card is plugged in

Launch the Application

Open the Windows App from your Applications folder or Launchpad.

Add Your Workspace

  1. Click the + Add Work or School Account button in the app

  2. Enter your VA email address

Authenticate Using Your PIV Card

  1. Enter your PIN when requested

  2. The system will verify your credentials against your company’s identity provider

Access Your Virtual Desktop

  1. After successful authentication, you’ll see available resources (desktops and applications)

  2. Double-click on the desktop or application you want to access

  3. Your virtual desktop or application will launch in a new window

If you minimize the connection center you can use full screen and still tab across applications
